Our hearts and prayers are with the families of Uvalde, Texas following the unspeakable tragedy that occurred yesterday. There are no words for this worst nightmare of families, educators, and schools across the nation. We all hope and pray daily that a horror such as this will never touch our loved ones, our community.

Here at Springfield Public Schools, nearly 26,000 students are entrusted into the care of our school system every day. Their safety and that of the adults in the school buildings alongside them, is our top priority. Over the past several years, we have invested several millions of dollars into upgrades to our security systems and procedures. We convene regularly as an internal team and also with local, state, and national safety experts for ongoing review and re-evaluation of our protocols.

Many of those protocols are easily visible, such as the locking of doors, the requirement of a sign-in system, the presence of security officials, and more. Other safety tactics in practice are less visible or noticeable, but they are in place. And we have made it a practice and principle to always err on the side of caution.

As the nation grieves for Robb Elementary School, let us work together as a community to keep each other lifted. Be kind to one another. Utilize the resources made available to students and families through schools, community centers, faith-based organizations, social networks and more. And please be certain that Springfield Public Schools remains hyper vigilant about school safety and security.
